During this congress, organised by the New Water Culture Foundation and the University of Murcia, our colleague Juan Santos presented a paper entitled “The historical and recent problems of metals in the Mar Menor”. During his presentation, he gave a historical overview of the mining exploitation of the Sierra de Cartagena-La Unión and its associated environmental impact. He also stressed that, although the problem of the Mar Menor is currently focused on eutrophication, the problem of metal pollution is still there. Mainly associated with the high levels of sediments that can act as a continuous source to the water column or organisms in the lagoon. He also participated in another presentation by Dr. Isabel Caballero entitled “Remote sensing tools for monitoring the Mar Menor”, which shows the usefulness of satellites for monitoring the Mar Menor and for providing early warnings of ecological catastrophes.
