During the DGT2023 international congress, which brings together world experts in the use of passive samplers of environmental pollutants, our colleague Juan Santos presented a paper entitled “The utility of passive samplers to monitor changes in trace metal levels in a coastal lagoon under different singular environmental events”.

This work highlights the suitability of using this type of sampler in coastal systems exposed to high anthropogenic pressures, in this case mainly mining. The occurrence of singular environmental events such as torrential rains or strong winds and sediment resuspension, alter the levels of metals in the water column. These samplers, which integrate metal levels over several days, detect these increases more adequately than point sampling.
